What Is Twitter?

Twitter is a microblog that enables the end user share your ideas, thoughts and feelings in 140 characters or less. In the world of social networking Twitter can be compared to the best thing since sliced bread. According to Jennifer Van Grove, Associate Editor for Mashable, Twitter set a new record for 3,283 tweets per minute.

Twitter is a great no-cost way to market a brand, business, product or blog as well as a great way to keep up with what family, friends and celebrities are tweeting about. Internet access is required in order to communicate on Twitter.

What Is Tweeting?

When posting microblogs they are called tweets. One good thing about Twitter is end users are allowed to repost and share tweets that are tweeted by others. This is called re-tweeting.

What Are Followers?

Twitter allows end users to follow the tweets of others that post tweets on Twitter. Twitter also allows others to follow tweets by the end user. Twitter offers a privacy setting that allows the end user to pick and choose who can view tweets.

What Are Hashtags?

Twitter allows end users to categorize tweets with the use of hashtags. In order to use a hashtag end users would put the '#' sign in front of the word. This will put the word in a the category of the end users choice. Hashtags are considered characters and be used several times in a tweet as long as it do not exceed 140 characters per tweet. Hashtags are also a great way to keep up with trending topics on Twitter.

Trending topics are the most popular topics on Twitter. Trending topics change throughout the day and can be found on the bottom right hand side of any Twitter.com page.

Customizing Your Twitter Background

When signing up for Twitter everyone is provided with an identical default Twitter background. Under the Design tab Twitter offers several alternative backgrounds. If the end user does not want to use the default Twitter background or the alternative backgrounds, then Twitter background can be customized. In order to customize a Twitter background editing software (e.g., Photoshop) is required.

Twitter serves as a value tool to allows end users to communicate with family, friends and co-workers as well as keep up with the latest news, gossip and more.
